Drop-side cots remain a practical and space-saving solution for many parents, especially during those early months when lifting your baby in and out of the cot happens countless times a day. However, like all nursery furniture, they must be used correctly to ensure your baby’s safety.
At our company, safety is at the heart of everything we do. All of our cots are designed and manufactured in line with current UK and European safety standards, including BS EN 716-1: & 2:2017+AC:2019, and are tested accordingly. This guide will help you use your drop-side cot Waffi confidently and correctly at home.
What Is a Drop-Side Cot?
A drop-side cot features a side panel that can be lowered to make it easier to place your baby into the cot or lift them out. While convenient, it’s essential that the drop side is always used properly and securely.
Correct Cot Base Positions by Age
Your cot base should be adjusted as your baby grows:
- Highest position – Suitable for newborns who are not yet mobile
- Middle position – Use once your baby begins to roll
- Lowest position – Essential once your baby can sit up, pull themselves up or stand unaided
⚠️ Important: The lowest base position is the safest and must always be used as soon as your baby can sit up independently.
Using the Drop Side Safely
- Always keep the drop side raised and fully locked when your baby is in the cot
- Never leave your baby unattended with the drop side lowered
- Even when not in use, ensure the drop side is securely locked in position up
Mattress Safety Guidelines
Choosing the correct mattress is just as important as the cot itself:
- The gap between the mattress and cot sides must not exceed 30mm
- The mattress height must not exceed the marked safety line inside the cot
- Ensure:
- At least 500mm from mattress top to cot edge (lowest base position)
- At least 200mm from mattress top to cot edge (highest base position)
📏 Key Safety Check: The distance between the mattress surface and the top of the cot sides should be at least 50cm when in the lowest position.
Keep the Cot Clear
To reduce risks such as suffocation or entrapment:
- Do not use cot bumpers
- Avoid attaching mobiles or toys to the drop side
- Never leave anything in the cot that could act as a foothold
- Keep the sleeping space clear and minimal
Safe Sleep Guidance (UK)
We strongly recommend following guidance from the NHS and The Lullaby Trust:
- Always place your baby on their back to sleep
- Use a firm, flat mattress
- Keep your baby’s head uncovered
- Avoid loose bedding, pillows, or soft toys
- Share a room with your baby for the first 6 months
A clear, uncluttered sleep space significantly reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Cot Placement in Your Home
Where you position your cot matters:
- Keep the cot away from windows, especially blind cords or curtains
- Avoid placing near radiators, heaters, or open fires
- Ensure the cot is placed in a safe, stable location
Regular Maintenance Checks
To keep your cot safe over time:
- Regularly check that all nuts, bolts, and fittings are secure
- Tighten where necessary, but do not over-tighten
- Do not use the cot if any part is broken, torn, or missing

Cleaning & Care
- Clean using a damp cloth only

Using a Second-Hand Cot
If you are using a pre-loved cot:
- Check it carefully for damage or wear
- Ensure it still meets current safety standards
- Always use the original instructions where possible
